Memorizing literature (musical theater songs) as a hobby
I like to learn musical theater songs, practice them while I'm walking on the street, and commit them to memory, just like people who memorize poetry. It's like my own mp3 player, I can call stuff up on demand ("today I should sing this song"). If it's a particularly thoughtful song, it reminds me of the entire musical work, like quoting a section of a Shakespearean drama.
Do people still do this kind of thing? I think of the Chinese schoolchildren who are told to memorize Tang Dynasty poetry.
(Some people might not think of musical theater as literature or art, but I do. If you don't agree, go look at some Sondheim musicals.)
